NATO bombs Libya with depleted uranium and an UN-mandate

The UN is specialized in the removal of depleted uranium in Serbia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Gaza and Libanon. Why then NATO has an UN-mandate to bomb Libya with bombs of depleted uranium ?

Did the UN signed a deal with NATO (‘You may continue bombing with uranium bombs if we can clean up the uranium’) ?

I am working for the Belgian human rights association 'Werkgroep Morkhoven' which revealed the Zandvoort childporn case (88.539 victims). The case was covered up by the authorities. During the past years I have been really shocked by the way the rich countries of the western empire want to rule the world. PressTV – ‘West uses depleted uranium in Libya’
Press TV interviewed Randy Short, a human rights activist in Tripoli
    http://www.presstv.ir/detail/183361.html

There is a “significant difference” between what is being covered on the Libyan intervention by Western media outlets and what is happening in the North African country, human right activist says.

There have been reports of depleted uranium, cluster bombs and other illegal substances in the capital city Tripoli, despite NATOs denial of depleted uranium used in its humanitarian efforts in Libya.

Press TV interviews Randy Short, a human rights activist in Tripoli, to further discuss the issue.

Press TV: Is there a difference of what you are hearing in the main stream media and what you have found so far?

Short: Yes, there is a significant difference, one that, the people are not turning against the Jamahiriya or their spiritual leader, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi. There seem to be a lot of determination to resist by any means necessary.

Also what we are seeing a lot of people being injured by bombs, had been ordinary civilians in residential areas, not soldiers, not people as military targets, but people who are more or less the victims of terror bombings, like what was done to Vietnam, Cambodia, Grenada, Panama, that sort of treatment of people,.

Press TV: So, doctor short, have you visited the areas that have been bombed by NATO?

I’ve been to one particular area; we have been to Saif Gaddafi’s house, and in that community, which was residential, and saw the damage to civilian homes. They didn’t just blow up Saif’s house, but the neighbor’s right across the ally, there home had to be abandoned, it was destroyed, glass was smashed, roofs fell in, and several people were injured seriously.

There were even other houses were fragmentations from bomb reinforced concrete walls across the street.

Press TV: Now, we were talking just a little while ago and you were telling me about reports which you had heard about depleted uranium being used…

Yes, there is a group of people dealing with the environmental impact of NATO’s invasion or attack on Libya. And reports are coming in of these unusual weapons that are being used, depleted uranium, cluster bombs, and other things that should be illegal to be used.

Press TV: Now has this been documented?

Short: The material is in Arabic. I think if there is an opportunity to share what we are finding, I would gladly do that. I think we will speak again.

Press TV: You have talked about some of the military installations, now tell me the about that, That they were not as secure as they once were?

They are not secure at all. the people who were guarding for the mustard gas and the yellow cake uranium and other materials that I guess there was an agreement signed in, December 2003, as Gaddafis people began to pull these things out of circulation they became secure, everything wasn’t handed to the people who handle weapons of mass destruction.

So, there is still stuff out there, and without the soldiers of the national Libyan government protecting it, it means it … in with these people, and as you know there is a relationship between al-Qaeda and these so called rebels in eastern Libya, that means, they have the opportunity to go and get material. And our feeling is that this will used to end up being a another sick black flag attack on ,maybe, the public in Europe or someplace used ,maybe, for an excuse for war, maybe against Iran.

So there will be a provocation if this stuff isn’t secure, and then we will have more wars and more excuses and there will be more lies.

Press TV: Are you telling me that there are weapons of mass destruction that are not secure right now in Libya?

Exactly, the raw material for which it could be made is not secure, and I don’t consider it secure if it’s in the hands of these people who have been very reckless with money, with human life.

Press TV: Why do you say that they have been reckless with money? Are you talking about the people in Benghazi? And what exactly do you mean about that?

The people in Benghazi got control of the central bank of Benghazi and they have squandered LYD 900 million, and USD 505 million, and the have not yet paid the people who work for the local government, there not paying their bills, the money has disappeared. Can you imagine what they would do with yellow cake uranium, or mustard gas?

They have also extra-judicially had people murdered. These are not rational careful, considerate bureaucrat; some of these people are just madden killers.

Press TV: Why are you in Tripoli at this time? What are you looking for exactly?

The American people are not told the truth about what happens in the Middle East, we are not told the truth about all these wars. We are being told that Tripoli has being leveled by NATO and it’s just any number of days before Libya falls to get people to give up hope and to just accept how thing are happening.

We wanted to what was here, and what were finding is something very different from what we here from CNN or Aljazeera. On top of that we wanted to show that here are Americans who care about Africa, we care about the Middle East, I am a Christian, but I care about Muslims, and we want peace and I think that Mr. Obama does not deserve this peace prize for him to use this a weapon to attack people of colored Muslims around the world. We want peace we want justice, we want a free Africa, we want a secure Iran, we want a safe Venezuela. We want peace; we want the money spent on wars to stop and to be spent on rebuilding New Orleans, Detroit.

They don’t have the right to. America is like Nazi Germany against the rest of the world.

Toxic Intervention: Are NATO Forces Poisoning Libya with Depleted Uranium as They ‘Protect’ Civilians?
    http://www.thiscantbehappening.net/node/530

President Obama’s criminal launch of an undeclared and Congressionally unauthorized war against Libya may be compounded by the crime of spreading toxic uranium oxide in populated areas of that country.

This is latest concern of groups like the International Coalition to Ban Uranium Weapons, which monitor the military use of so-called depleted-uranium (DU) anti-tank and bunker-penetrating shells.

Specifically, the British-built Harrier jets used by British naval air forces and also by US Marine pilots, are often equipped with pod-mounted cannons that fire 20 mm shells–shells that often have uranium projectiles designed to penetrate heavy armor.

The US is flying A-10s over Libya. The A-10 Thunderbolts, known also as Warthogs, have a particularly large automatic cannon which fires an unusually large 30 mm shell. These shells are often fitted with solid uranium projectiles for attacking tanks, APCs or groups of fighters holed up in concrete bunkers.

A-10s were heavily used in the Balkan conflict, and officials of Kosovo were dismayed to learn that some 11 tons of uranium weapons were fired there, leaving dangerous uranium dust fallout in their wake.

The US military is fond of DU weapons because the material, made from uranium from which the fissionable U-235 has been removed, because it is extremely heavy, and, in alloy form, also extremely hard. Because of its mass, such projectiles can penetrate even the heaviest armor. Then, in the heat caused by the collision with an object, the uranium bursts into flame at extreme heat, causing an explosive (and toxic) inferno inside a tank or other vehicle, which usually also ignites any ammunition being carried. Soldiers inside a target vehicle are incinerated. The problem is that the resulting uranium oxide produced by such explosions, besides being highly toxic chemically, is also a microscopic alpha-emitter, which if inhaled or ingested by human beings is extremely carcinogenic and mutagenic.

Cities in Iraq where DU weapons were heavily used, such as Basra, Samara, Baghdad, Mosul and probably especially Fallujah, which was virtually leveled in a November 2004 Marine assault, are showing high rates of birth defects, many of which, along with unusually high rates of leukemia, medical experts say are emblematic of fetal radiation damage.

A University of Michigan peer-reviewed study of births in Fallujah published in December 2010 found that of 547 births in Fallujah General Hospital in May of 2010, six years after the all-out US assault on that city of 300,000, in which DU weapons were reportedly used widely, 15% of babies had birth defects–a rate more than five times higher than the global average of 2-3%.

Battle for Libya & Depleted Uranium Munitions

Although NATO flatly denies using depleted uranium in bombings in Libya, others like Gulf War veteran and depleted uranium expert Melissa Sterry is adamant (after viewing video footage of bombings) that DU is indeed being used.

So what is depleted uranium and why is it so dangerous?
DU is the waste product from the process of enriching uranium ore. It is used in nuclear weapons and reactors. Because it is a very heavy substance, 1.7 times denser than lead, it is highly valued by the military for its ability to punch through armoured vehicles and buildings. When a weapon made with a DU tip strikes a solid object like the side of a tank, it goes straight through it, and then erupts in a burning cloud of vapour. The vapour settles as dust, which is not only poisonous, but also radioactive.
An impacting DU missile burns at 10,000 degrees C. When it strikes a target, 30% fragments into shrapnel, while the remaining 70% vaporises into highly-toxic oxides, including uranium oxide. This black dust remains suspended in the air and, according to wind and weather, can travel over great distances.
Particles less than 5 microns in diameter are easily inhaled and may remain in the lungs or other organs for years. Internalized DU can cause kidney damage, cancers of the lung and bone, skin disorders, neurocognitive disorders, chromosome damage, immune deficiency syndromes and rare kidney and bowel diseases. Pregnant women exposed to DU may give birth to infants with genetic defects. Once the dust has vaporised, don’t expect the problem to go away soon. As an alpha particle emitter, DU has a half-life of 4.5 billion years.

DU in the Invasion & Occupation of Iraq.
Depleted uranium (DU) was used widely especially by America & Britain in 2003 in the invasion & occupation of Iraq. Cities in Iraq where DU weapons were heavily used, such as Baghdad, Basra, Samara, Mosul and especially Fallujah, which was virtually levelled in a November 2004 assault, have since been showing high rates of birth abnormalities along with unusually high rates of leukaemia.
A University of Michigan report published in December 2010 found that of 547 births in Fallujah General Hospital in May of 2010, (6 years after the all-out US assault on that city), 15% of babies had birth defects, a rate more than five times higher than the global average of 2-3%.
In September 2009, Fallujah General Hospital had 170 babies born, 24 % of whom died within their first week of life. This compares to August 2002, six months before the U.S. invasion, when 530 live births were reported with only six dying in the first week.

    Protecting Libyans with Depleted Uranium?
The aim of the UN resolution (on a no-fly zone over Libya) was formulated very precisely to protect civilians. So the very use of these abhorrent weapons in itself threatens all Libyans. It is not a coincidence that former US Justice Secretary Ramsey Clark slammed the use of depleted uranium weapons as “an unacceptable threat to life and a violation of international law” Now are the Libyan opposition forces and their supporters in the UK still blind and deaf to believe the humanitarian justification pretext used by the NATO led military intervention? Or are they too nationalistic to fully comprehend that the use of these deadly weapons is like a postponed death sentence on the future generations of Libyan.
